why do people call native americans apache

The Apache are only one of many tribes that inhabited North America when the Europeans arrived.  Others included the Sioux, the Cherokee, Shawnee, Pawnee, Mohawk, Seneca, Cheyenne, Owasso, Oglala, Cayuga, Onandoga, Iroquois, and many more.
