Edith Pargeter's short stories include The Purple Children which is about the British occupation of Cyprus. The natives want to chase the British to leave by using terrorism. The British, on the contrary, want to stay and be respected, so they try to find who is performing the terrorism. The color purple stands for the dominance the British hold over the Native Americans, and the purple paint splatters depict those who will soon die or face punishment. The British are putting a death tag on the other Native Americans because of the way they behaved, as seen by the purple vegetable dye they sprayed on them.What is the overall theme of the book The Purple Children?The Purple Children's fundamental message is that there is power in numbers and that the weak may defeat the strong. A girl going by the name Mariposa emerges after curfew, saying she is looking for her cat, who escaped while she was gathering firewood. The inexperienced young guard didn't believe that a young girl like Mariposa could cause much difficulty. Mariposa was hesitantly allowed entry inside the Town Hall grounds to look for her pet. When they were still looking for the cat, they heard someone jump off the tall wall.  Mariposa is quite unhappy when she discovers there is no chance the purple dye she has all over her face will ever come off, and from the way she puts it, you could really picture being there and witnessing the disappointment on her face.
